Talk Summary

Digital health technologies have been leveraged to track personal health and promote self-care. Even though the most common implementations of digital health have been using mobile apps and mobile sensors, with the recent advancement in artificial intelligence and speech recognition, voice assistants (e.g. Google Assistant, Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa) have also been gaining interest to communicate and assist in personal healthcare. While the other digital health tools have relied on users to interact with graphical interfaces (e.g., scrolling, swiping, clicking), voice assistants can be described as speaker devices or smartphones programmed with software agents on alert for a keyword to “wake,” which then recorders the user’s voice, processing and interpreting the command via a server, and responding back with a voice response or completed task. During this talk, you will be introduced to some of the implementations of voice assistants in healthcare regarding adult and pediatric settings. Examples from ongoing projects will be shared including voice interactive symptom tracking applications, performance of capability of current voice assistants in response to health seeking behaviors, creating conversational behavioral interventions, and using voice “samples” as digital biomarkers.

Biography of Speaker

Emre Sezgin is a scientist focusing on digital health research and development for adult, adolescent and younger pediatric populations with a recent focus on chronic conditions, remote care and digital engagement.  Currently working as a digital health scientist at the Research Institute of Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, Ohio) and contributing to innovative and technology-driven solutions in pediatric healthcare. Emre received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Information Systems at the Graduate School of Informatics, Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey. He had training in business administration, information systems, computer science and patient centered pediatric research, and had experience in digital health and clinical informatics research with the projects funded by NIH, PCORI, HRSA, AHRQ and other federal and national foundations. He has been contributing as author, editor, reviewer & volunteer to the society and academia.
